South Australia’s rugby league clubs are delighted they will soon have purpose-built facilities with a National Rugby League (NRL) standard pitch.
In as a state where Australian Rules football dominates public attention, the rugby clubs say the $5.5-million development at Penfield will support the grassroots development of their code.
Central Districts Rugby League Club president Adam Levy said modern facilities would help attract more local families to the sport.
“Our committee over the last five years has been putting in the hard yards to support the community and now the community is supporting us back,” he said.
The eight-hectare park in northern Adelaide will have three ovals suited to cricket, soccer and rugby. Work is expected during 2017.
About two decades on from the failure of Adelaide rugby league franchise The Rams, Mr Levy is hopeful SA will one day have another top-standard team.
“We’re developing well. Hopefully we can get another NRL side back in within the next five years,” he said.
NRL SA said more than 15,000 people were playing rugby league in South Australia, across junior and senior competitions, including touch, flag and tackle.
Next year, a regular season NRL match will be played at Adelaide Oval, with the Melbourne Storm taking on the Sydney Roosters.
The Central Districts Roosters are affiliated with the Sydney-based NRL franchise and plan to highlight the progress on their new facilities when the Sydney Roosters are in Adelaide next June.
“We’re going to bring them out to the city of Playford area and show them what’s happening out here.” Mr Levy said.
“They’ve been a great fraternity to be part of … and they’ve bring more games to Adelaide.”
